SEPTEMBER 1981-HIGH GEAR Page 5
Hail, toga party!
By Gordon Hathaway Always wanted to visit Rome and tour its ancient ruins but couldn't afford it? Well, Ancient Rome came alive on East Ninth Street when Keys held its first Toga Party on Wednesday, August 19.
with helmets and gold breast plates. Kevin, part owner of the bar, looked much like a Roman statesman on his way to address the masses. Even the bar's male dancer, normally scantily-clad, donned a toga for the evening's performance.
The citizenry in attendance The "friends, Romans, and sported several different styles of countrymen" in attendance lent togas, ranging from the very their ears to the sounds of pulsat"mini" to "maxi." Bartenders ing disco music as the evening appeared ready for battle intheir festivities worked to a feverish gladiator costumes complete pitch. Several of the citizenry
were seen refilling their glasses at the wine fountain while they munched from the buffet table containing cheese, crackers, succulent fruits and other delectable morsels. As the evening
wore on the wine fountain did not run dry as was evidenced by the citizenry who became less inhibited with each passing hour. Owners, Kevin and Mark, have
once again shown their patrons a great time. Hopefully their first Toga Party will become an annual event.

Writing to prisoners
By Steve DelNero
HIGH GEAR has received several letters from prisoners who ask us to print their names and addresses for our readers who might want to correspond with
them.
To men and women who are incarcerated, a letter, even from a stranger is welcome. To those who have been abandoned by their family and friends, these "pen pal" relationships are one of their only contacts with the outside world.
Although the humanitarian aspect of corresponding with prisoners cannot be denied, some guidelines are suggested. Most of the letters say that any letter will be answered, regardless of age, sex, or race. However, it should be noted only one letter of those we've received has given any indication that they realize that HIGH GEAR is a gay publication.
It's possible that many of the prisoners listed below got HIGH GEAR's name in a list of periodicals, and would not know for certain that you were gay in your letter unless you told them.
You should also realize that some prisoners write very lonelysounding letters to grab your sympathy, and perhaps to send them money or help in their legal defense. Even with the best intentions, you should be cautious if you find yourself in this situation.
Both Dignity and the Metropolitan Christian Church have organized non-denominational prisoner/volunteer communica-
tions. Each group could use some volunteers, and both have set up some suggestions to follow. If you want more information on the Dignity network, write to the Dignity Prison Ministry, P.O. Box 18479, Cleveland, Ohio 44118.
